CAANCB member & anatomist, Dr. John Basmajian

Prominent Canadian scientist, physician, anatomist, and leader in rehabilitative medicine, Dr. John Basmajian, has recently died, according to the Globe and Mail. He died in Burlington Ontario March 18, 2008, at the age of 86. A long obituary appeared in the Globe and Mail on April 21, 2008.

As an anatomist Dr. Basmajian would have been best known to members of the CAANCB. He was an author of many useful texts and articles and a few years ago, he arranged for reprints of one of his many books (his surface anatomy pocket book) to be made available to medical students. He also established a very prestigious award for the American Association of Anatomists.

Dr. Bressler has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to life sciences research and has a passionate belief in the value of commercializing intellectual property from universities and research hospitals. During his tenure as Vice President of Research at the University of British Columbia (1996-1999), he was actively involved in the growth of the University Industry Liaison Office, which has become a world leader in development and management of technology transfer and biotechnology spin-offs.

It is because of his foresight and leadership in this area that UBC scientists are amongst the nation’s leaders in translational medical research. Since 1996, he has served as a Board member of Discovery Parks, and in 2007 was appointed Chair of the Board of Discovery Parks and Discovery Parks Foundation.

The awards will be announced at the Annual Awards Banquet of the Association in Winnipeg, in June, 2008. For the JCB Grant, ML Barr, and AW Hamm Awards, four copies of the application (includes letter of nomination, applicants current CV, and any attachments) are required. The Department Human Anatomy and Cell Science, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing September 1, 2008 or soon after.

This advertisement is directed to outstanding candidates with a particular interest in Clinical Anatomy who have established or will develop competitive externally funded research programs. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. and/or an M.D. degree or equivalent, and have demonstrated competence in teaching human gross anatomy and neuroanatomy to medical and other students in the health sciences and evidence of successful teaching of the same to students in both large group and small group settings is required.

The Department of Basic Health Sciences invites applications for the position of temporary, part-time Instructor (33%), for the 2006 fall term, to teach Fundamentals of Neurology, a five hour per week course for students in the first year of the Electroneurophysiology Technology Diploma program. The course is a flexible combination of lectures, seminars, case studies, student presentations and attendance at Neurosciences Grand Rounds (Vancouver General Hospital).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Clinical experience in Electroneurophysiology preferred
Previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level
Knowledge of common neurological disorders, their presentation, diagnosis and treatment is required
Bachelor’s degree; master’s preferred
Good communication skills
Team player committed to a collaborative approach as well as ability to work independently

The successful applicant will likely have a master’s degree in a related field.

The CAANCB/ACANBC Council is requesting nominations from the general membership of the Association for the following elected positions. The term of office for each position will begin following the Annual Business Meeting of the Association, to be held in Saskatoon in June, 2006.

Treasurer: - A three year term.
Councillor: - One Councillor is required to fill a member-at-large position (term of three years.)
Awards Committee: - Two individuals are required to serve on the Awards Committee. The Committee is responsible for selecting the annual award winners of the Association. Each individual will serve a two year term.
Science Policy Committee: - Two new members are required to replace and fill a vacant position on the Science Policy Committee. This Committee establishes priorities for science policy as it pertains to the Association and the larger scientific community through the Science Policy Committee of CFBS, The term of office is for two years.

For students who are not members, we encourage you to join the CAANCB/ACANBC as a student member. Any graduate student enrolled in a Department of Anatomy or an associated department (this includes Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Molecular Biology and related departments) in Canada may join the Graduate Student Division of the CAANCB/ACANBC
by joining the CAANCB/ACANBC as a student member. Membership information can be found under the Constitution of the Association below.

This year, the Graduate Student Division of the CAANCB/ACANBC is requesting nominations or volunteers from the general membership of the Association for the positions of President and Secretary/Treasurer.

The President's responsibilities include attending CAANCB/ACANBC council meetings, serving on the Awards Committee, and organizing social events for graduate students at the annual meetings. The Secretary/Treasurer will act to assist the President in these duties and also take care of finances for the Graduate Student Association.

CAANCBGS/ACEGANBC Constitution

Section I - Preamble

Article 1: The name of the organization will be the Canadian Association for Anatomy, Neurobiology, and Cell Biology Graduate Students (CAANCBGS)/Association Canadienne des Etudiants Gradues en Anatomie, Neurobiologie et de Biologie Cellulaire (ACEGANBC), (hereinafter referred to as the Association).

Article 2: The goals of the Association include:

a) providing an effective link between graduate students and the CAANCB/ACANBC,
b) giving students specific representation within the CAANCB/ACANBC,
c) organizing special events for the benefit of graduate student members of the CAANCB/ACANBC.

Section II - Membership

Article 1: Any graduate student enrolled in a Department of Anatomy in Canada may join the Association by joining the CAANCB/ACANBC as a student member. Students must be sponsored by a member of the CAANCB/ACANBC.

Article 2: The annual call for dues for members of the Association shall be handled by the CAANCB/ACANBC Treasurer with transfer of the appropriate amount into the Association account.

Section III- Organizational Structure

Article 1: There shall be a Council in which final authority resides for the legislation of policies of the Association. The Council shall consist of a President, Secretary-Treasurer, and one graduate student representative from each Anatomy Department in Canada.

Article 2: There shall be an elected executive which shall consist of the positions of President and Secretary/Treasurer.

The President shall:

be responsible for the general functioning of the Association;

be sole spokesman for the Association;

be responsible for convening meetings of the Association;

be ultimately responsible for the finances of the Association;

be a member of the CAA Awards Committee;

be a member of the Council of the CAA;

be a co-signatory of cheques.

The Secretary/Treasurer shall:

be responsible for recording and circulating of the minutes of Council meetings;

refer all correspondence of the Council and the Association to the Secretary;

receive all accounts due to the Association;

prepare a yearly budget;

be a co-signatory of cheques.

Section III - Meetings

Article 1: The Association shall meet every year at the CFBS meeting. This meeting shall be the Annual General Meeting. The order of business of this meeting shall include the election of a President and a Secretary/Treasurer.

Article 2: The quorum of the General Annual Meeting shall consist of thirty-three percent (33 %) of the CM student associate members present at the CFBS meeting.

SCHOLARSHIP TRUST

Purpose
The Scholarship Trust has been established to create an endowment fund from which monies will be awarded to students enrolled in postgraduate degree programs in anatomy to help defray expenses when attending the annual CFBS meeting to present their research. An essential component of a student's training is the opportunity to present and defend the results of their research before other scientists.

The CAANCB/ACANBC recognized that funds for this purpose are scarce and established an endowment from Association funds several years ago. At present a minimum of five awards of $100 are distributed annually. The Awards Committee of the Association selects those abstracts to be supported based on the excellence of the scientific work. In an effort to enlarge the program, the Association approached the Federal Government and created the CAANCB/ACANBC Scholarship Trust.

The further development - value and number of future awards - of the Trust is dependent upon the tax deductible donations of Association members. All monies donated to the trust will be expended only for the purposes outlined.

Donations
Donations are tax deductible as a credit and can be submitted to Revenue Canada and/or Revenu Quebec in the year the donation has been made. An official tax receipt will be issued provided that the donor has indicated that the donation be held for a period of not less than 10 years.

The donation form provided below includes a statement of this intent. The purpose of this declaration is to permit the accrual of funds as a Trust, with travel awards drawn from the interest generated.

CONSTITUTION OF THE ASSOCIATION

1. The name of the society shall be: Canadian Association for Anatomy, Neurobiology, and Cell Biology/Association Canadienne d'Anatomie, de Neurobiologie, et de Biologie Cellulaire, hereafter referred to as the Association.

2. The purpose of the Association shall be to advance the knowledge of anatomy and to represent anatomical sciences in Canada.

3. The Association shall consist of members as defined under the rules.

4. The affairs of the Association shall be administered by a council of nine members (charter or elected). The Council shall be composed as follows:

President - elected for two years
Vice-President - elected for two years
Secretary - elected for two years with possible two year renewal
Treasurer - elected for three years
Chair of Awards Committee - appointed by Council for three years
Chair of Science Policy Committee - appointed by Council for three years
Members-at-Large - three in number elected for three years, one to be elected each year

5. A quorum of Council shall consist of five members.

6. Standing Committees:

Nominating Committee to propose new and a slate of officers to be presented to the annual meeting for election. The Nominating Committee shall consist of four members, to include the President (as chair), the Past-President, and two non-members of Council, to be selected by the chair.
Awards Committee to select from nominees the winner for each of the annual awards of the Association. The Awards Committee shall consist of a chair appointed for a three-year term by Council and four elected members serving for a two-year term. Two elected members shall be elected each year.
Science Policy Committee to establish priorities for science policy as it pertains to the Association and the larger scientific community through the Science Policy Committee of CFBS. The Science Policy Committee shall consist of the Chair and five members, to include the President, Vice-President, Secretary and two non-members of Council, who are to be elected. The elected members shall serve for two years, one being elected each year. The chair of the Science Policy Committee shall be appointed by Council.

7. Meetings of the Association shall consist of an annual meeting and such other meetings may be deemed by the Council to be advisable from time to time.

RULES

1. MEMBERSHIP

The Association may have honorary members, emeritus members, charter members, elected members, associate and student members.
Honorary members: distinguished scientists may be elected to honorary membership, without voting privileges.
Emeritus members: a member who retired from a full-time appointment, may be elected to emeritus membership, retention of all privileges.
Charter members: anatomists holding full time appointments, active or emeritus, of the rank of lecturer or higher in any of the Medical Schools of Canada at the date of the founding of the Association (October 17, 1956) were invited to become charter members.
Elected members: any other person who has contributed to the development of the science of anatomy may be nominated for elected membership. A candidate for elected membership shall be proposed by two members (charter or elected), one of whom shall have personal knowledge of the candidate. Nomination papers (of the approved form) for each candidate for elected membership shall be submitted to Council, and on its recommendation the name of the candidate shall be submitted for election at the next annual meeting of the Association; election to be by the majority of votes cast.
Associate members: any other person who has given evidence of interest in the science of anatomy may be accepted (by the secretary) as an associate member, without voting privileges.
Student members: a full or part-time student enrolled in a graduate program in the science of anatomy may be accepted (by the secretary) as a student member, without voting privileges.

2. FISCAL YEAR

The fiscal year of the Association shall begin July first and end on June thirtieth of the following year.

3. ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION

The annual dues of the Association for the ensuing year shall be determined at each annual meeting. In addition, charter, elected, associate and student members shall pay the Federation levy. The Federation levy is determined annually by the Federation Board; it entitles the member to receive Federation literature and privileges. Honorary and emeritus members shall pay no subscription to the Association.

The annual subscription of new members is due on the first day of January following the date of their election. All subscriptions shall be invoiced by the Treasurer of the Association.

No member shall be considered to have resigned until the member has signified an intention to do so in writing to the Secretary.

A member in arrears for dues for two years shall be dropped from membership. Membership may be reinstated, on payment of arrears, at the discretion of the Council.

4. MEETINGS

An annual meeting shall be held each year at a date and place to be determined by the Council.
Other meetings may be called by the Council on the written request of any ten members or at other times as the Council deems advisable.

5. PROCEDURE

The ordinary laws of the Canadian parliamentary procedure shall be employed in the conduct of the meetings.
- For ordinary motion, except ones concerning constitutional changes, simple majority of those present at the meeting shall be decisive.
- Motions to amend the Constitution shall not be voted on in the year in which they are proposed, unless notice of motion has been circulated in writing to all voting members, not less than one month before the annual meeting.
- For election of officers, voting shall be by written ballot; election to be by simple majority.
- A mail ballot may be called by Council; decision to be by simple majority of the ballots returned.
The accounts of the Association shall be audited prior to the Annual meeting by auditors appointed at the previous annual meeting.
Any member wishing to make a suggestion to the Council regarding a change in the Constitution of the Rules or on any
other pertinent matter shall do so by letter addressed to the Secretary.

The various awards of the Association are as follows:

J.C.B. Grant Award

Presented to an outstanding senior scientist, who is a full professor, in recognition of special merit and achievement in research and teaching in the field of anatomy, neurobiology or cell biology. The recipient should have contributed significantly to science in Canada, and be recognized internationally as a leading scientist. Nominations for this award shall be allowed to stand for 3 years in a row. This award is sponsored by the Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins Publishing Company, Baltimore, Maryland.

Murray L. Barr Junior Scientist Award

Presented to an outstanding young scientist in recognition of special merit and achievement in the field of anatomy, neurobiology or cell biology. The recipient must be an assistant or associate professor with no longer than ten years of active employment, after appointment at the assistant professor level, at an academic institution. The nominee should have at least 12 publications, excluding abstracts, as senior author or contributor. Nominations for this award shall be allowed to stand for 2 years in a row. This award is sponsored jointly by the Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins Publishing Company and the Murray Barr Memorial Trust Fund.

Arthur W. Ham Graduate Student Award

Presented to a Ph.D. student who has graduated or is expecting to graduate during the academic year of nomination, and who is an outstanding student in the field of anatomy, neurobiology or cell biology as indicated by scholarships, fellowships, awards, etc. The recipient should be the senior author or contributor of at least 2 publications, excluding abstracts, and have made at least two presentations at scientific meetings. This award is sponsored jointly by the Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins Publishing Company and the CAANCB/ACANBC Chairs.

Research Publication Award of the CAANCB/ACANBC Chairs

This award is valued at $250 and is presented to a student who is either sole author or senior author of an article judged to
be the most outstanding publication or original research in the field of anatomy, neurobiology or cell biology.

C.P. Leblond Research Presentation Award

These awards (2), valued at $400, are sponsored by the CAANCB/ACANBC Chairs and are given to the students presenting the best poster ore platform sessions at the annual meeting. Students interested in competing for the awards should forward the title of the poster/paper, together with SIX COPIES of their abstract directly to the Chair of the Awards Committee (address below). If a student is making more than one presentation, he/she must specify which one he/she wishes to be adjudicated, because only one entry per student is permitted for award purposes. Judging will take place at the annual meeting.

Travel/Meeting Awards
Two travel awards are available annually to help graduate students in anatomy, neurobiology, and cell biology defray travel expenses to attend the CFBS meeting to present their poster. Students interested in competing for these awards should forward the title of their poster, together with SIX COPIES of their abstract directly to the Chair of the Awards Committee (address below). These awards, valued at $400 each, are sponsored by the CAANCB/ACANBC Chairs.

Note: No award can be won more than once by the same person.

There are several categories of membership.

Elected Membership
Any person who has contributed to the development of the science may be nominated for Elected Membership. Usually, such applicants have either published at least one independent original article, or have been mainly responsible for one or more articles of joint authorship. A candidate for Elected Membership must be sponsored by two elected members, one of whom has personal knowledge of the applicant. The completed application form and membership fee should be submitted to the Secretary at least one month prior to the annual meeting of the CFBS in June of that year. Applications are considered by Council at its annual meeting. If approved, the applicant will be recommended to the membership for election by a simple majority vote at the Annual Business Meeting of the Association.

Associate Membership
Persons who have demonstrated an interest in the discipline may be nominated for Associate Membership. Candidates for this type of membership are usually persons who have not yet contributed to the literature through publication. This category includes individuals like lecturers, demonstrators, research assistants, medical artists, etc. The completed application form and membership fee should be submitted to the Secretary who may accept Associate Members at any time. Associate Members do not have voting privileges at meetings of the Association but
receive all notices and literature concerning the CAANCB/ACANBC and the CFBS. When the requirements have been fulfilled, an Associate Member may apply for Elected Membership status.

Student Membership
Any individual currently enrolled as a graduate student is eligible. As with Associate Members, Student Members do not have voting privileges in the Association but receive all notices and literature from both the Association and the CFBS. Completed application forms and membership fees should be submitted to the Secretary who may accept student members at any time.

Emeritus Membership
An individual who has been a member in good standing of the Association for at least 10 years may, upon retirement, apply for Emeritus Membership status in the Association. There are no membership dues required by the Association but there is a CFBS fee if emeritus members wish to continue to receive mailings from the CFBS.

Membership Fees

Annual membership fees of the Association include a CFBS levy and GST. An individual who is already a member of another Federation Society will only pay the CFBS levy once (with the membership fee of the initial Society). The CFBS levy entitles each member to the privileges of the Federation and to receive its literature as well as abstract forms and information pertaining to the annual meeting. Fees for membership are due on January 1 of each year, and notices are sent out each November.

ABOUT THE CAANCB/ACANBC

The Canadian Association of Anatomists/Association Canadienne d'Anatomie was founded on October 17, 1956 to advance knowledge of Anatomy and to represent the anatomical sciences in Canada. In November 1995, the name of the Association was changed to the Canadian Association for Anatomy, Neurobiology, and Cell Biology/Association Canadienne d'Anatomie, de Neurobiologie, et de Biologie Cellulaire to better accommodate individuals with diverse research backgrounds and interests who share the common task of teaching in the various disciplines of anatomy and related fields.
